In the Classroom

Music

"True learning begins with the fear of the Lord; when we view knowledge through the lens of Scripture, we don’t just inform minds—we transform hearts."
At Mingo Valley Christian, academic excellence goes hand in hand with joy, purpose, and faith. Our rigorous academic standards challenge students to think critically, communicate effectively, and pursue truth diligently—all within a nurturing environment grounded in a Biblical worldview. We believe learning should be both meaningful and engaging, which is why our classrooms are filled with dynamic instruction, hands-on activities, and a deep sense of purpose rooted in Christ. Every subject, from science to literature, is taught through the lens of Scripture, helping students understand not just the "what" but the "why" behind their learning. At MVC, we cultivate minds and hearts, preparing students to impact the world for God’s glory.

Lower school

Pre-K through 5th grade students visit our music classroom once a week, where they are introduced to both vocal and instrumental music, as well as music theory and history. Each fall, our music teacher Ms. Hobbs prepares the students for our annual Christmas Concert, a much-loved yearly MVC tradition in which Lower School students perform special numbers for all our families. Older Lower School students may participate in the 4th and 5th Grade Choir, which rehearses weekly and performs a few times a year.

Middle School

Our 6th through 8th grade students are exposed to a one-semester course that provides general music appreciation, composer studies, hymnology, and beginning to intermediate vocal and instrumental performance experiences in the classroom. Students may also participate in a Middle School Choir that rehearses once per week and performs a few times a year.

Middle School students are also able to participate in Instrumental Ensemble, which meets several mornings a week before school, with an emphasis in learning the basics of their chosen instruments. They have opportunities to perform with older Instrumental Ensemble students throughout the year.

Upper school

In grades 9th through 12th, students are offered Choral Ensemble as a daily elective, which they can take for one year of high school or for all four. Choral Ensemble provides students the opportunity to perform choral music in a group setting. Students celebrate the gift of music from a biblical perspective; they gain music literacy skills, and they sing in a variety of performance experiences at school, in the community, and in music festivals.

Instrumental Ensemble meets several mornings a week before school, providing the opportunity for 7th-12th grade band, string, and keyboard students to perform instrumental music in a group setting. Instrumental Ensemble class meets three mornings per week, and high school credit is available for 9th-12th grade students. These students perform every spring as the orchestra for our theatre productions, and they play at other special events as well.
