MVC Senior Amelia Cherry Named National Merit Semi-Finalist

Congratulations to Mingo Valley Christian senior Amelia Cherry, who has been recognized as a National Merit Semi-Finalist! This high academic honor is bestowed on fewer than 1% of the nation’s 12^th graders. An MVC student since kindergarten , Amelia also serves as a Citadel leader, and she’s been a student leader in National Honor Society, Key Club, and Yearbook staff. She plays the flute in the MVC instrumental ensemble, and she volunteers twice a week at a therapeutic riding center for special needs kids. She plans to attend Oklahoma State University in the fall.

MVC Superintendent Dr. Boyd Chitwood says of Amelia that she “has always been an academic leader in her class, so she has certainly reinforced that leadership with this national recognition. I want to say, too, that Amelia shows servant leadership for all around her in her kindness, commitment to Christ, and genuine spirit of being there for others.” Her English teacher, Mr. Chad Anderson, concurs: “Amelia quietly does all that needs to be done, does it with excellence . . . and then does more. She exemplifies servant-leadership.”  

 

The MVC community is cheering and praying Amelia on as she advances to the next phase of the competition. She is now in the running for 7,500 National Merit scholarships (worth $30 million) that will be awarded next semester, after several more qualifying stages of the competition.
